The erection of monolith tradition was prevalent among the majority of Khasi communities before embracing the Christianity. A huge monolithic stone memorials of local tribes can be seen in the Bhoi area of Meghalaya. It is commonly known as 'U-Mawthoh-Dur'. The memorial pillars are of diverse shape and design erected in memory of the celebrated heroes.
