For ensuring and safeguarding the cultural wealth of the country, the Archaeological Survey enforces the antiquarian legislations viz. the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972; the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites & Remains Act, 1958 and 1959 rules thereon and the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites & Remains (Amendment & Validation) Act, 2010.

Apart from providing brief information about the centrally protected monuments/sites located in North-East India, the main objective of this small booklet is to instill an awareness among the people, particularly the young masses, about the importance of our rich cultural heritage, which is very essential to conserve, preserve and maintain the cultural property. It is the prime duty of every one to abide by the acts & rules like the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites & Remains Act, 1958 as amended by the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites & Remains (Amendment & Validation) Act, 2010. The local bodies like the Gram Panchayat and Municipal Corporation, Development Authorities etc. should also make provision of NOC form ASI while giving permission for constructional and mining activities near protected monuments/sites. The District & Police administration should co-operate with the ASI in the removal of illegal/unauthorized constructions within the prohibited and regulated areas of the protected monuments.

Let us pledge to preserve & maintain the rich cultural heritage of our country for our posterity. It lies with our constitutional duty as well.
